The course Higher Education Didactics for Sustainability (HEDS) aims to empower educators, pedagogical developers, and others involved in curriculum design in higher education to integrate sustainability into teaching practice. The course is designed using a problem-based learning approach, which engages learners in small groups to collaborate – through discussion, experience sharing, and collective learning – to explore tools and competencies needed to foster a more sustainable world through education. Lund University is a partner offering this course to participants from around the world.

The course language is English and conducted entirely online, providing you with the opportunity to engage with course materials and collaborate with international peers. To fully participate, you'll need access to a computer and a stable internet connection. The course primarily utilizes Zoom for virtual meetings and may incorporate other digital tools based on the needs of each group.

The course embodies the values of presence, care, honesty, respect, and engagement. Given the nature of the course, attendance, active participation, and adherence to these values is a must for you and your peers to benefit from the collaborative problem-based learning approach.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate, with pedagogical merit or credit equivalent to 3 ECTS / 2 weeks of teacher training.

The course does not require any previous pedagogical coursework or training. 

Course Dates

The course runs 29 January – 26 April 2024.

The course is equivalent to 80-hours full-time work, approx. 6 hours per week, including one voluntary full-class seminar, two problem-based learning group meetings, and individual study.

The voluntary full-class seminars take place online from 13:00-14:00 on the following days:

  • January 29
  • Febrary 5, 14, 19, 28
  • March 6, 11, 20
  • April 8, 17
  • April 25 **10:00–12:00**

Course Facilitators

This course is a collaboration between Mid Sweden University, Karlstad University (KAU), Linköping University (LiU), Mälardalen University (MDU), Lund university (LU) and Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (Inn). The course is offered jointly, while credited separately by each of the participating universities.

Course participants will engage with course facilitators from each partner university. The responsible course facilitators from Lund University are Steven Curtis and Terese Thoni.

Prerequisites: None

Scope: The workload on the course equals two weeks of full-time work (80 hours). For doctoral students, the course is evaluated to ECTS credits by your faculty. 

The course is provided free of charge.
