Teaching in academia – the scholarship of teaching and learning

University teaching should be research-based and senior lectures, despite their title, are expected to be both teachers and researchers at the same time and to develop a composite and complex competence. This competence is a prerequisite for research-based education and for helping our students develop research skills. However, the question is: How can we conceptualise competence in academic teaching? What is characteristic of senior lecturers that help their students to deep learning and to realise their full potential? How can pedagogical qualifications be documented and assessment of teaching competence be improved? These are important questions for educational development, especially since the traditional way to a senior lectureship goes through doctoral education and research qualifications.
