Applied research carried out in close collaboration with industry brings many benefits but is certainly not challenge free. Researchers who study industrial practice and practitioners oftentimes have to trade important qualities and make difficult compromises. Many situations arise from the necessity to keep the confidentiality agreements, deliver according to plans or simply because of thenecessity to publish (“rules of the academic game”). At the end, we make compromises to academic integrity, research fairness, transparency, reliability, generalisability, orrelevance. In this talk, you will hear about the typical challenges and lessons learned from applied research with industry from prof. Darja Smite.

Smite is a professor of Software Engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology and a part-time research scientist at SINTEF in Norway. She leads research efforts focusing on human aspects of software engineering (remote and distributed work, virtual collaboration, teamwork, self-organisation, well-being) in close collaboration with Ericsson, Spotify, Telenor, Storebrand, SONY and other companies. As such, she has first-hand experience with addressing various aspects ofresearch ethics andacademic integrity. Smite is also teaching Research Ethics to post-graduate students.
