Between Responsibility and Uncertainty: Novice Co-Supervisors Navigating Roles, Expectations, and Emotional Support
This presentation examines how novice co-supervisors experience their role during the early stages of doctoral supervision. It focuses on the range of responsibilities they assume in practice. Particular attention is given to the emotional support they provide to doctoral candidates. While such support is not unique to co-supervisors, novice supervisors often find these situations especially demanding. The study highlights how unclear role distribution and unarticulated expectations within supervisory teams may contribute to this uncertainty. It also explores how co-supervisors navigate tensions between research-oriented responsibilities and the provision of personal support. Overall, the findings point to the need for clearer structures and enhanced support for emerging supervisors.

Bio of Cecilia Almlöv
Dr Cecilia Almlöv holds a PhD in Technology and Learning from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and has an academic background in sociology and education from Uppsala University. Her current research centres on comparative studies of policies on team supervision in Europe, as well as on supervision in relation to the increasing number of doctoral candidates experiencing well-being challenges.
