Embedding Sustainability into your Teaching Practice: A Practical Crash Course
Boost your teaching for sustainability by joining our working sessions in this practical crash course. The crash course contains three sessions, where each session gives you dedicated time to work on your own course, get constructive and hands on support, and connect with colleagues. You are welcome to join all three sessions or choose the ones that suit you.
What to Expect
Each session begins with a short check-in and goal-setting activity. You will choose specific sustainability-related improvements to work on in your own teaching.
The facilitator will offer a short introduction to the day’s topic, examples for inspiration, useful materials, and both pedagogical and content-focused guidance.
Throughout the session, you will work on your own course in several rounds and receive structured peer feedback. We end the workshop with an optional group lunch (at your own cost) to continue building community.
Session Topics
This crash course contains three sessions, each with its own topic. You are welcome to join all three sessions or choose the ones that suit you.
Session 1: Teaching sustainability concepts within your subject
Together we explore the basics and take the first steps towards integrating sustainability in your teaching. First we take a first look at core concepts (e.g., UN Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, biodiversity loss) and then you'll get to use examples from your own discipline and connect them to sustainability.
Session 2: Practicing for a sustainable future through sustainable pedagogies
Sustainable pedagogies are often experiential, place-based, and inclusive. They help students feel seen, heard, and capable of contributing to a sustainable future. In this session we will look at ways of introducing or strengthening these approaches in your own course.
Session 3: Reflecting on your role as a teacher
Teaching sustainability comes with tensions: neutrality vs. personal stance, disciplinary expertise vs. broader perspectives. During this session we will explore the tensions that matter to you and support you in finding your own way to navigate them.
