Exploring Aspects of Oral Assessment
In a landscape increasingly influenced by technology and standardisation, various forms of oral assessment can help to gauge a student's depth of understanding, critical thinking skills, and ability to articulate complex ideas.
Oral assessments offer an opportunity for meaningful dialogue between teachers and students, providing a dynamic interaction for immediate feedback and nuanced evaluation. Unlike more common forms of assessment such as quizzes, exams, or essays, oral assessments may ensure reliability and validity, when used to complement existing assessment practices, especially in the face of artificial intelligence. They can be tailored to serve either formative or summative purposes, depending on their design and implementation. In this seminar, we'll explore the complexities and opportunities inherent in oral assessments, aiming to discuss practices for conducting these evaluations effectively and equitably.
During the seminar, we will discuss:
- Pedagogical Aspects: Consider the use of oral assessments in relation to your educational goals and intended learning outcomes. Understand how they can be designed to encourage deep approaches to learning and critical thinking.
- Quality Aspects: Discuss the importance of reliability and validity in oral assessments. Explore methods and best practices for quality control, such as using assessment matrices for note-taking.
- Practical Aspects: Delve into the logistics of conducting oral assessments, from question design to time management. Learn how to create an environment that encourages open dialogue and meaningful interaction.
The seminar will feature interactive group discussions, providing a platform for sharing experiences and challenges, enriched by the diverse teaching and disciplinary backgrounds of attendees from across the University.

The seminar is free, but space is limited to 40 participants. Please register by Friday 8 March to secure your spot. Fika will be provided.
This seminar is intended for educators at Lund University. Others are welcome to register, but priority will be given to those with existing teaching assignments at Lund University.
The seminar will take place at Room O104 in the MNO Building. The entrance is located at Sölvegatan 16, 223 62 Lund. Upon entering, signage will be visible directing you to the room location.
